Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
